September 5, 2007

The meeting of the Hunters Woods Elementary School PTA was held on September 5, 2007 in the school library. PTA President Maureen Becker called the meeting to order at 7:40pm.

Minutes from the July 11 meeting were reviewed and stand as written.

Mini-Grant Appeal:

Ms. Leniart presented a mini-grant appeal for various classroom and extracurricular activities. As the director of the Student Council Association, she presented a mini-grant to support the elections, an election celebration and general SCA school activities. She also appealed for funds for the 5th grade classes to supplement classroom activities, with a special emphasis on science supplies. Attached are the detailed mini-grant applications.

President Becker explained the mini-grant process and stated that a mini-grant vote would be held at the end of the meeting.

Treasurer Report:

Deborah Lannen discussed the new Budget for 07-08, specifically the removal of scholarships as a line item and the Directory and After School Programs were moved to the Income column of the Budget because they have become income producing. A vote was held to approve the new Budget and was so approved by the majority.

A new format for the Audit Report was shown and will be presented for approval at the next PTA meeting.

President’s Report:

Maureen Becker introduced the executive committee to the meeting and thanked all the committee chairs for their hard work over the summer. She discussed the few committees, which lacked a chair and asked for volunteers. The committees in need are the Yearbook, Bus Driver/Crossing Guard Appreciation, Craft Coordinator for Fall Harvest Festival and Sweet Shop.

Oct. 10 will be the next PTA meeting. It was moved so it would not conflict with Back to School Night.

Teacher Report:

There was no Teacher Report during the meeting.

Committee Reports:

Sally Foster Fundraiser – Nancy Mamros stated that next week’s Tuesday folders would contain the Sally Foster information. She asked for volunteers on Friday, Sept. 7th, in the Blackbox at 8:30am to prepare. Also, she needs volunteers for a few days in October and November 2nd. If you would like to help, contact giftwrap@hwpta.org.

There will be a school grounds Workday on Oct. 13th or Oct. 27th depending upon the weather. Remember workdays are for adult parent volunteers and please remember to bring gloves and tools.

Nov. 1-2 will be the annual Pumpkin drop-off at Kiss and Ride. The pumpkins are put to good use as compost for the school grounds.

Principal’s Report:

Mrs. Toatley stated that school year was off to a great start. She thanked the PTA for the wonderful 1st Breakfast for returning staff and teachers. She stated that 10 new teachers and staff were added over the summer.

Mrs. Toatley gave a presentation of the Annual Yearly Progress Report – English and Math scores for the school, which is available on the Fairfax County website. These scores count toward the school’s accreditation, which Hunters Woods continues to retain. A general discussion ensued regarding what the school is doing to improve Standards of Learning scores this year. PTA volunteers are needed to help prepare the 4-6 grades for their Math SOL’s.
