Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences

May 3, 2006

The regular monthly meeting of the Hunters Woods PTA was held on May 3, 2006 at Hunters Woods Elementary School . PTA President Cathy Uhrig called the meeting to order at 7:42 PM. Minutes from the April meeting were read and approved as written.

President's Report

Cathy Uhrig thanked Susan Sather for chairing the meeting last month. She also thanked Rozanne Silverwood, Karen Berube, Jennifer Arakelian, Maureen Becker, Susan Brownsword, Jody Wolfe, Trish Heatherly, Ann Richards, and Debi Miles for their work on Snickerdoodle. Cathy also thanked all the parents who helped with Primary Science Night, and all room parents and parents who helped with Writers Celebration. She also thanked Marina Matthes, Angela Irwin, Blakely Meyers, Maureen Becker, Emily Madden, and Nathalie Belleville for helping with Office/Clinic Appreciation; she thanked Blakely Meyers, Joan Burkhart, and Lisa Foley for Yearbook; also, Susan Rigger for Plant Sales, Maureen Becker, Deborah Lannen, and Nancy Mamros for Book Fair. Cathy thanked Nancy Mamros for arranging the Preschool Coffees.

Cathy also thanked everyone for their support over the past 2 years.

Cathy reported that the Executive Committee voted to give teachers a 25% discount, $10 gift certificates to students identified by Diane Beers, and one free book per Headstart student. Then, she passed around the chair list.

Treasurer's Report

Susan Brownsword distributed the budget through April 2006. Susan reported that there was not much activity to the budget, and if you have receipts and need reimbursement, please get those receipts in. The report will be filed for audit.

Teacher's Report

None.

Committee Reports:

Cathy Uhrig reported that Chick-fil-A needs a volunteer to wear the cow costume.

Outdoor Beautification: Catherine Linberg reported that the Reston Garden Tour is scheduled for June 3, 2006 . Hunters Woods is the 4 th stop on the tour, and tickets will cost $20. This is a fundraiser for the Walker Nature Center . She also reported that this is the first time that a school has been part of the Reston Garden Tour. Catherine also informed us that the 6 th grade students helped the 1 st grade students plant corn. She also reported that the trash barrels out on the fields now have lids.

Plant Sales: Catherine Linberg reported that 33 purchasers went to Gaelic Gardens , with the total amount of sales of $461.95. Hunters Woods will receive 25% of the total sales.

Staff Appreciation: Cathy Uhrig reported that Teacher Appreciation will be on May 8, 2006 . She reported that Hunters Woods had 92 staff members, and they would receive a Baja Fresh refill cup and a $10 gift card.

Book Fair: Volunteers are needed for this event.

Principal's Report: Robin Mentzer reported on behalf of Olivia Toatley. She reported that there will be a 2 year study on how teachers integrate the arts with the content area. She also reported that the Basketball marks in the gym need to be fixed.

Unfinished Business: Unable to vote on the slate, because there was no quorum.

New Business

Lisa Foley requested a minigrant of $2,433 for the yearbook committee. She would like 1 representative from each 6 th grade class to be part of the yearbook committee. Those representatives would take pictures of events, and therefore Lisa Foley would like to purchase 3 digital cameras, memory cards, a memory card reader, and Adobe photo shop. Blakely Meyers would help run the equipment.

The next PTA meeting will be held on June 12, 2006 at Cathy Uhrig's home. Please see the agenda for other upcoming events and dates.
