Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences

October 5, 2005  

The regular monthly meeting of the Hunters Woods PTA was held on October 5, 2005 at Hunters Woods Elementary School. PTA President Cathy Uhrig called the meeting to order at 7:55 PM. Minutes from the September meeting were read and approved as written.

President's Report

Cathy Uhrig thanked Janice Bako, Glenda Meisner, and Nancy Mamros for doing a great job with the Gift Wrap. She also thanked Raba Letteri, Susan Brownsword, and Shashi Ravishankar for Hospitality, Stacey Graf and Joy Heuer for Membership, Karen Berube for Apparael, Susan Sather for Room Parent Sign-up, Susan Brownsword and Maureen Becker for Budget and Vote, and Susan Sather and all of her helpers for Oldest and Only. Cathy also thanked Blakely Meyers and Eleanor Desai for Fall Harvest, Dianne Hansen, Maureen Becker and Cindy Hann or Volunteer Coordinators, Theresa Fleischmann for her help with Chick-Fil-A, Susan Sather and Catherine Linberg for editing the Hunters Horn, Catherine Linberg for Outdoor Beautification and Marquee, and Katy Vickland for helping with Steve's nomination.

Cathy also thanked everyone who has signed up to chair an committee, and announced that there are still openings for another After School Activities Chair, Parent Education and the Literary Magazine (collect and copy).

Cathy reminded everyone to please remember to send Kelly Midura a synopsis of upcoming events so she can post them on the website and use your forwarder e-mail address.

Also, anyone interested in helping with vision and hearing screening on November 9 and 10 sign up sheet or contact the clinic. Also, make sure you sign up for KIT at hwpta.org link. Cathy reminded everyone that all committee chairs must be members of the PTA.

Treasurer's Report

Susan Brownsword distributed the Budget Report through September 30, 2005. She also reported that there was not much activity to the budget.

Susan Brownsword made a motion to accept the proposed budget, as voted on during Back to school night. Motion was seconded and approved.

The report will be filed for audit.

Teacher's Report

Karen Egan reported that the Chick-Fil-A event was great. She also reported that the teachers thought that Oldest and Only was a great idea. The teachers thought Back to School night went well and thank everyone for coming. Karen reported that SCA elections were successful. Also, the bake sale and carwash, held to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims, raised $1,000. Friday is the deadline for donations.

Committee Reports:

Legislative Report: Cathy Uhrig received the legislative review and distributed it. PTA day is in January. The PTA was asked to let the PTA at the state level know weather or not we support their policy statements. Legislative action item #1 was agreed upon. Policy statements:

Fall Harvest: Blakely Meyers reported that she still needs volunteers to help coordinate the food and games for this great event. Cathy Uhrig and Mary Ellen Rubenstein volunteered coordinate the food.

Book Fair: Nancy Mamros reported that she is still looking for volunteers to help set up for the Book Fair.

Maureen Becker made a motion to give teachers a 25% discount on books, and to give free books to Headstart students. The motion was seconded and approved.

Gift-Wrap: Nancy Mamros reported we sold over $36,000 of gift-wrap, and that orders will be sent via FedEx on Friday October 7, 2005.

Tuesday Folders: Susan Sather reported that the marking of the folders for Only and Oldest was quick and easy.

Directory: Susan Sather reported that she is still waiting for the handbook for the directory. She also reported that ad sales are finished.

Hunters Horn: Susan Sather reported that the next issue of the Hunters Horn will be distributed on October 18, 2005 .

Room Parents: Susan Sather reported that she needs more room parents and that she will send volunteer names to the Fall Harvest committee.

Sock Hop: Jane Kolb reported that the sock hop has been scheduled for Oct. 14, 2005 , and it will last about 2 hours long. Jane reported that she has a lot of volunteers, and encouraged every one to bring a canned good to be donated to the homeless.

Apparel: Cathy Uhrig reported that Karen Berube has a lot of adult sized apparel left for sale.

Carrabbas Dinner: Angela Irwin reported that the Carrabbas dinner will be held on Dec.1, 2005. The price of the dinner will be $5 a plate with a $25 family cap. Drinks, dessert, and paper products are paid for by the PTA. Angela also reported that the type of dessert has not been decided. There may also be music during the dinner.

Outdoor Beautification: Catherine Linberg reported that many volunteers helped during clean-up day. Also, there will be an article in the Washington Post on Oct.13, 2005 regarding the visit to Hunters Woods by the Audubon Society. The next work day to plant bulbs has been scheduled for Saturday, Nov.12, 2005. Rain date will be the following day. Catherine will be receiving donated pumpkins for the compost heap on Nov.3-4, 2005. The stone map is still in the future, and Catherine is looking into making a quiet path made with rocks, where students could go to get in touch with nature.

Mini Walk: Cathy Uhrig reported that Hunters Woods will be participating in the mini walk to benefit Embry Rucker Shelter on Oct.23, 2005 at 2:00 PM. The registration for adults is $25 and for youth $15. Fannie Mae will match every dollar earned.

Risograph; Marina Matthes handed out flyers regarding the procedures for using the risograph.

Principal's Report: Olivia Toatley reported that everything is fine. The teachers have settled in and are ready to go. She also thanked the PTA for Mr. Hockett's party and she expressed her appreciation for the parental support she is receiving.

Unfinished Business: Cathy Uhrig reported that Hunters Woods will not be using the video yearbook this year.

New Business: Cathy Uhrig reported that the 4th grade team is requesting a $532 mini grant in order to purchase "Kids Discover" magazines.

Susan Sather made a motion to give $532 to the 4th grade so they can purchase "Kids Discover" magazines. The motion was seconded and approved.

Headstart Teachers: Susan Sather reported that teachers asked for $10 gift cards from Safeway in order to buy Birthday snacks.

Susan Sather made a motion to set aside $10 for 30 kids to get Safeway gift cards to be use to buy Birthday snacks for Headstart. The vote is contingent upon Olivia Toatley's discussion with Headstart teachers regarding the need for these cards.

The next PTA meeting will be held on Nov. 2, 2005 at 7:30 PM at the school. See the agenda for other upcoming events and dates.
