Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences

August 11, 2005 

The regular monthly meeting of the Hunters Woods PTA was held on August 11, 2005 at Hunters Woods Elementary School . PTA President Cathy Uhrig called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. Minutes from the June meeting were read and approved as written.

President's Report

Cathy Uhrig thanked everyone who has signed up to chair a committee position. She reported that two of our volunteer coordinators are back, and Maureen Becker is the third one. Cathy also asked anyone who was interested in becoming more involved to let her or any of the three volunteer coordinators know. She sent around a list of open positions that still need to be filled. Openings include Another After School Activities Chair, Word Masters, Calendar Sales, Risograph, Fall Harvest Festival, Another Membership Chair, Another Yearbook Chair, Parent Education and Another Open House Picnic Chair. The Literary Magazine needs an overall coordinator, someone to "collect and copy", and someone for "distribution".

Cathy reported that Kelly Midura is working hard to get the school and PTA websites updated, and she would like an additional chair to help with the content.

PTA meetings will begin at 7:30 PM for the coming school year, and will be preceded be a program that will be a Principal's Coffee, Parent Ed or any other kind of program on issues of interest. This format gives us a lot of flexibility to meet the needs of our school and families.

Keep in Touch will be updated with the new volunteer opportunity sign ups.

Cathy also informed us that the PTA would nominate Steve Hockett for Principal of the Year.

There will be a dinner catered by Carrabas on December 1, 2005 (Math and Technology night), or on January 19, 2005 (Band and Strings concert).

Treasurer's Report

Cathy Uhrig reported that we have a lot of money, and that we need to spend it. She discussed the loss of the weather station and the possibility of purchasing a new one with the extra money in the budget. The audit will be done soon.

Teacher's Report

Karen Egan reported that the teachers had a great summer, and she thanked the parents on behalf of the teachers for supporting them.

Committee Reports

Membership: Membership dues were accepted at the meeting.

Gift Wrap : We changed from Sally Foster to Innisbrook.

Apparel: Karen Berube reported that she would have nine different items for sale this year. Bags, gym bags, baseball caps, white dress shirts, zip up hoodies, t-shirts, polo shirts, denim shirts and sweatshirts will all be offered and will include the Hunters Woods logo.

Room Parents : Susan Sather reported that she looking for room parents and that there would be a sign up sheet during Open House rather than at Back to School Night.

Hunters Horn : Susan Sather reported that she needs articles to be submitted by Aug 19, 2005 for the first Hunters Horn of the school year.

Outdoor Beautification : Catherine Linberg asked for help weeding and harvesting the school grounds. She also told us about the plan of having a flat stone map of Virginia painted in front of the school by the parking lot. Catherine is in the process of getting more trash barrels and recycling bins. September 24, 2005 from 9 am-2 pm is work in the garden day. Catherine encouraged everyone to bring his or her tools and their kids to help. In addition, on June 3, 2005 Hunters Woods has been chosen to be on the Tour of Gardens.

Word Masters : Julia Kropp- Sullivan is looking for coaches.

Principal's Report

Betsy Goodman, the cluster VIII representative, addressed everybody's concerns regarding the stability of the administration. She also explained the deadline for any input regarding the selection of the new principal. Mr. Hockett reported that he will miss Hunters Woods School, but he is also looking forward to the new challenges he will face at Mc Nair Elementary School.
